Mari Boine

Mari Boine er en fremtredende norsk-samisk world music-sangerinne og musiker, som er spesielt kjent for å ha fornyet joik, samt modernisert samisk musikk ved å oppta elementer fra blant annet jazz, rock og folkemusikalske tradisjoner. Hun har vunnet flere Spellemannspriser og Nordisk Råds musikkpris, og hun ble i 2009 utnevnt til ridder av 1. Klasse av St. Olavs orden for ”sitt allsidige kunstneriske virke”.

De siste årene har hun reist rundt med forskjellige konstellasjoner; akustiske konserter og danseforestllinger, men i forbindelse med utgivelse av samlealbum i februar 2011 er det igjen på tide med en skikkelig norgesturné med full produksjon.

Mari Boine is a Norwegian Sami musician known for having added jazz and rock to the yoiks of her native people. Born in Finnmark, Norway she grew up amid the Laestadian Christian movement as well as amidst discrimination against her people. Gula Gula (first released by Iđut, 1989, later re-released by Real World) was her breakthrough release, and she has continued to record popular albums that has listeners all over the world.

In 2003 Boine was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize for her ethnic intuition, her artistic strength and for an ability to communicate which lets her reach people in all corners of the world. Regardless of cultural background. She has retained her musical roots, while giving them a contemporary expression which reaches an enormous audience all over the world. She was appointed knight, first class in the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for her artistic diversity on September 18, 2009. Early 2010 she will, for the first time, release a best of album.

Mari Boine can touch on strings you might not know you had. It can provide meaning, but it can also create moments which cant be defined. Moments which go to your core, that touch some sort of primal instinct, and that put you in a trancelike condition.

Music can confuse you. But it can also make you feel happy, uplifted or enriched. And maybe even more whole. Mari Boines music has this effect. You cant leave a meeting with Mari and her music untouched. That is, if you dare to let her get close. Her music is actually simple. It is in the meeting between the songs, her voice and the musicians in the band that it gains strength. And in the interaction with the listener, because you must meet Maris music with an open mind.
